If street food is your thing, the Boiler Shop Steamer is Newcastle and Gateshead’s biggest and best street food event. Located within the impressive Boiler Shop building where George Stephenson’s Rocket was first built, this monthly event was founded by the owners of popular seaside restaurant Riley’s Fish Shack and Wylam Brewery to celebrate great food, drink and music in one central spot at the heart of Newcastle City Centre.
Hosting live bands, craft beer stalls and stands serving street food by some of Newcastle and Gateshead’s best restaurants and more, the Boiler Shop Steamer is a great day or night out and a fantastic social event for locals, visitors or folk just looking for some decent grub.
No two Boiler Shop Steamer events are ever the same, with an ever-changing selection of vendors from across the north east and the UK flocking to sell their delicious wares beneath the magical glow of fairy lights. This monthly gathering provides a warm welcome in the heat of summer and cold winter evenings so there’s plenty of opportunity to experience it for yourself.
Attendees can grab a taste of the north east coast at Riley’s Fish Shack, the resident seafood stall that has become famous across the region for its freshly grilled fish wraps, delicious lobster and surf and turf specials. Meanwhile, the Boiler Shop also sees regular appearances from the juicy burgers of Newcastle favourites Fat Hippo, Middle Eastern wraps and salads by Papa Ganoush and traditional Chinese steamed dumplings by Nan Bei.
Whether you’re an avid foodie or hoping to try out something new, the Boiler Shop Steamer has food from virtually every type of cuisine. Mexican, Japanese, barbecue, vegetarian or pizza; you can try just one or try them all to get a true taste of what the Newcastle Boiler Shop Steamer has to offer.
Past guests have also included some of Newcastle best local restaurants such as Manny’s Pizza Deli, Lola Jeans, Claw Hide, On The Goa, Electric East, Pizzette, Coop Chicken House and Longhorns to name a few as well as big names from further afield such as Big Apple Hot Dogs, The Mac Shack and El Kantina. Sweet-toothed foodies have been treated to sugary delights by The Doughnut Guy, Le Petit Creperie and the Crema Caravan, so there’s a little something to everyone’s tastes.
Thirsty folk are also spoiled for choice with carefully chosen craft beers and ales by Wylam Brewery which are the perfect accompaniment to the great dishes on offer, ensuring that your visit is off to a good start. The live music is also a big part of the event with the space having hosted the BBC6 Music Festival in 2015 and what better way than to enjoy local bands and performers than with a locally-brewed pint?
With a full venue refurbishment in 2016, the Boiler Shop Steamer is set to continue to grow even bigger and better with the addition of more floors and outdoor spaces - which means even more room for dancing, drinking and sampling the edible (and drinkable) delights on offer!
