Blackfriars Restaurant is a time-honoured traditional British restaurant in the heart of Newcastle. Home to the oldest dining room in the UK, it offers gutsy, traditional British cooking at its best, created using seasonal produce sourced from local artisan suppliers and farmers as well as thier own herb garden!
After a year of meticulous and painstaking research and restoration, Blackfriars 13th century restaurant has reopened its ornate medieval banquet hall for bookings throughout the festive period.
The hall, which is adjacent to the main 72 seater a la carte restaurant, has been lovingly refurbished withauthentic and bespoke banners, chandeliers, wall coverings and stained-glass windows together withreclaimed wooden screens, large oak communal dining tables and matching chairs all created by local craftsmen. With pricing options ranging from just £7 per person for breakfast up to £35 per person for a four course medieval banquet or bespoke options for those really special occasions.
The restaurant is set within a horseshoe of buildings, which also house a number of craft shops and provide shelter for the medieval courtyard used for alfresco dining in the summer. The dining room itself was built in 1239, and has made its home in the former monastery of the Blackfriar Monks.
The chefs here focus on seasonal produce sourced straight from local farms and markets, and serve up a real taste of the North East. In fact, Blackfriars is so passionate about local produce that diners only have to glance down at the placemats to glimpse a map of the region, showing exactly which farm each component of their meal has come from.
Blackfriars holds regular gastronomic events, including the restaurant’s well-known medieval banquets and alfresco dining from the Terrace menu in the summer. All events and menus can be found on the restaurant’s website, or simply call on the number above to find out more and book your table.
