NewcastleGateshead. World Class Culture

Science Festival

When: 12/03/2010 - 21/03/2010

Newcastle ScienceFest explodes back onto the North East’s cultural calendar in 2010 with a 10-day bumper programme of unique experiences. Where else can you learn how to speak Chimpanzee, race power tools, meet a robot world-record holder and step inside a bubble?

The headline weekend of Newcastle ScienceFest will be Maker Faire (March 13-14) - the world’s premier event for DIY technology and craft. Very popular in both the US and Japan, Maker Faire is for people of all ages who like to tinker and love to make things! Expect cool robots, clever gadgets, garden shed inventions, knitted wonders, the occasional fireball, and much more. Among the star attractions at this year’s Maker Faire will be Rubot II – the world’s fastest Rubik’s cube solving robot and Power Tool Drag Racing – where visitors can have a go racing belt sanders down a 20ft track! Takes place at Life Science Centre and Discovery Museum. Ideal for both families and adults.

ScienceFest also presents a series of innovative late-night events as part of its After Dark strand. Catering exclusively for adults, these special events include The Secret of Good Sex, a late night opening of Life Science Centre exploring body modification, and Bitter and Twisted – a cocktail evening exploring taste sensations with Jack Cains Gin. Also includes collaborations with AV Festival and Northern Lights Film Festival.

The festival is delivered in partnership with Centre for Life, Tyne and Wear Museums, Newcastle Science City, Newcastle University, Newcastle City Council and culture10 as part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events.
