The Hoppings

When: 19/06/2009 - 27/06/2009

Europe’s largest travelling funfair heads to town, with a long associated history with the city, dating back to 1882.

The Bomber, the Jammer, Equinox and Evolution are just some of the rides that have thrilled and chilled excitement hungry Geordies at the Hoppings over the last few years. It seems that every time Newcastle’s traditional fair pitches up on the Town Moor there are bigger, faster, scarier ways to get your kicks.

This year’s Hoppings should be no exception with the fun starting on Friday 19 June and lighting up the Town Moor until Saturday 27 June.

Of course, as well as the white knuckle wonders, you’ll be able to enjoy old favourites - waltzers, dodgems and ghost trains. There will also be plenty of rides for younger children such as carousels as well as every kind of fairground stall you can imagine.

The Hoppings is known to have began as a temperance festival back in 1882, although its history has been traced back to 1721, when horse racing took place on the Moor. Since the word Hoppings is Anglo Saxon for “Fair”, its roots may well lie even further back in the mists of time.
