Night time celebration of UK street food
A new food festival first is coming to the North East – this time an Urban Night Feast.
This exciting event brings together some of the UK’s best street food vendors along with top regional based chefs.
Urban Night Feast – taking place in Newcastle on September 27-29 – will offer an international mix of freshly cooked street food along with beers, wines, cocktails and live music.
Held over three nights in the funky and industrial setting of Silverlink’s historic Boiler Shop, in the Stephenson area of the city centre, there will be street food from Turkey, Lebanon, Spain, Mexico, Vietnam and India. There will be pulled pork, jerk chicken, Indian chaat, grilled chorizo, Thai pork noodle soup, paella and Catalan style cod doughnuts and much more. Street vendors will travel from around the region, Manchester, Leeds and London. Urban Night Feast will come to life between 6pm to 12midnight.
The organiser is Newcastle-based Indian food chef and writer Maunika Gowardhan who is fast establishing a national and international reputation. She said of her idea: “The North East is getting a growing reputation for food festivals. This time I wanted to bring the best of the UK’s street food specialists together in Newcastle to showcase the variation and best there is. Holding it through an evening with live music just adds to the colour and atmosphere.”
Celebrated regional chefs will include Terry Laybourne and his head chef Chris Eagle at The Broad Chare; there will also be David Kennedy of Food Social preparing Turkish and Lebanese style food; former Masterchef finalist Stacie Stewart, of Sunderland-based Beehive Bakery will be service tempting puddings.
Another local vendor will be Adam and Lucy Riley from Riley’s Fish Shack who will be cooking fresh fish and flat breads on a flame grilling machine, which appeared at the inaugural Tynemouth Food Festival in May this year. Well known regional fishmonger Latimer’s Seafood will also be taking part.
Nationally recognised cooks and attractions include Rachel McCormack, a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4s food programme, The Kitchen Cabinet. In the last two years she established Catalan Cooking and has run a street food stall in Maltby Street Market, London for some time. She will be bringing her now legendary cod doughnuts to the market along with other traditional Catalan dishes that are rarely seen in the UK.
New London-based Indian street food vendor, Horn OK Please, will be manning a dosa and chaat stand. They have attracted huge attention from London’s food bloggers. Elsewhere Mexican and southern street food will be offered by El Kantina.
On hand supplying a range of regional hand crafted ales will be award-winning Wylam Brewery.
Entry will be free with each street food and drink vendor charging a discounted rate.
