Grainger Town

Newcastle upon Tyne
Grainger Town
Described as the ‘city of palaces‘ when completed in 1839, Grainger Town is an historic area right in the heart of Newcastle. Recently regenerated, the elegant ‘Tyneside Classical’ Georgian and stylish Victorian architecture can now be enjoyed to the full.
It contains many fine buildings and monuments, like the Theatre Royal and former Bank of England building (now a sophisticated bar called Barluga). Grey Street in Grainger Town has an elegant curve and was voted the ‘Best Street’ in England by Radio 4 listeners. It’s not hard to see why – it’s a real beauty.

With a great selection of high street names sitting comfortably next to smaller independent and specialist shops, it’s a shopping magnet for fashionistas.

The legendary Vivienne Westwood has opened her 6th UK store on Hood Street, stocking Gold Label, Red Label, Anglomania and MAN plus the full range of Westwood accessories and fragrances.

Reiss, Jigsaw, Kurt Geiger,Dune, Moda in Pelle and Office can also be on your shopping list. And when you need to sit down and recharge your batteries, you’ll find some of the best coffee shops and cafés. The Central Arcade built in 1837 is well worth a visit. Not only does it have an excellent selection of specialist shops, it has a stunning glass barrel-vaulted roof and glorious tile work to admire.
