Head westwards from the city centre into the Gateshead countryside and you’re in ‘Red Kites Country’. Its here that 94 magnificent rare Red Kites have been recently reintroduced.
Walk in Derwent Walk Country Park or visit the National Trust’s Gibside Estate or enjoy a ramble through Chopwell Woods. In this area, there are opportunities to see kites soaring and feeding over open countryside, communally roosting in winter and nesting birds in spring and summer.
Kites are spectacular birds of prey, which have up to a six-foot wingspan. They are gregarious birds that soar overhead and can perform aerial aerobatic displays.
Catch the Go North East ‘red kite’ bus from Newcastle City Centre or the MetroCentre (numbers 45 and 46) that head into ‘kite country’ at Rowlands Gill.
