The Discovery Museum is one of Newcastle’s most popular museums. Visit the Newcastle Story, the first ever display to chronicle the history of Newcastle from Roman times to present day, this super exhibit also tells you what to look out for when you step back onto the streets. The Science Maze with interactive exhibits will keep children happy for hours, while other galleries bring to life scientific and engineering artefacts invented on Tyneside, fashion through the ages and of course, once the world's fastest steamship 'Turbinia'.

Tanfield Railway in Sunniside; New MetroLand at the MetroCentre; Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth; Bill Quay Farm; Saltwell Park; and Whickham Thorns Outdoor centre, all in Gateshead; and Exhibition Park and Jesmond Dene are all superb places for a family day out.

Seven Stories, the Centre for Children's Books, a fantastic seven-storey converted mill which is the national centre celebrating children's literature. As well as exhibition and performance spaces, there is a cafe - with crazy, book-themed food - and a massive bookshop.
