Opening Weekend
Bambuco Celebrations - Friday 18 July 10pm, Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides
This summer, Australian company Bambuco will build an ephemeral suspension bridge made from bamboo and steel spanning the Tyne from Newcastle to Gateshead.
The month-long construction ends with this symbolic celebration and emotive moment of connection to launch the opening of SummerTyne. As nightfall descends, specially commissioned music from Brian Finnegan of Flook working with North East musicians Brendan Murphy, Simon Tarrant, Victoria Conlon and Hank Hays will be heard: two riggers will climb the length of the bridge, lighting flames along the bridge until meeting in the middle. Their balletic movements silhouetted in the night sky will create a breathtaking and awe-inspiring spectacle. Free event
Watch the bridge being constructed on the Tyne Bridge Webcam. Throughout the construction of the bridge, audiences will be able to visit exhibitions at both BALTIC and The Sage Gateshead and even join a Bamboo Orchestra! Check The Sage Gateshead website for details.
