Journey along the Tyne

Welcome to a story - of how our group of boys from the Pendower estate in Newcastle explored the River Tyne in North East England, from its source to the sea.
Come with us on our journey and find out about this amazing river along the way. If you look on a map you'll able to trace where we went by looking for the places in green type.
Here's a picture of us on our first adventure. Behind us is Kielder Water , a huge reservoir close to the source of the North Tyne.

Here's a picture of us on our first adventure. Behind us is Kielder Water , a huge reservoir close to the source of the North Tyne.

Here we are trying out Canadian canoes.
The girl standing up was teaching us how to be safe in them.

We jumped from a bridge into the reservoir.
No-one touched the bottom, even though it was a canny distance.
Dale: ‘That’s me jumping. I wasn’t even frightened’.

We took the canoes on to the reservoir. We stayed along the banks 'cos we were just learning.

The North Tyne and the South Tyne come together near Hexham to form one big river.
We explored the North Tyne near its source.
See how small it is. The water's really cold.
We went fishing to see what was in it.
Guess what we came back with - nowt!

The North Tyne starts getting bigger when it flows out of Kielder Water, over this dam.
We found a good place to play skippy stones. And we got the fishing nets out again,
and this time we found a canny big fish.

Our next Tyne adventure started at Prudhoe. This time we went on a cycle ride, all the way to Newburn.
Here we are at Hagg's Bridge near Wylam. It's an old railway bridge.

There aren't any trains on this side of the river now but there's a railway on the other side, and a castle at Prudhoe.
We saw the castle through the trees.

We stopped to look at the debris thrown on to the river banks by big floods in 2005.
There must have been tons of water to do this.

This rickety bridge joins Prudhoe to Ovingham.

Near Wylam we saw a swan.
And we saw a heron too, from this bridge. Down here the river looked really different from where it started in Kielder.

Our third trip was in the rain but we still had a good time. We walked right along the river from our estate to BALTIC. (BALTIC is a giant arts centre on the Gateshead side of the river).
Here we are on Baltic Square, beside the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the newest bridge on the Tyne. Behind us is Newcastle Quayside.
You can see what the weather was like....

Back at the start of the walk we could see Scotswood Bridge up the river in the distance.
There looked to be a white wave in the water below us.
When we climbed down to look closer we could see it was flotsam.
There was a tyre and all sorts in the water.

Here's some more flotsam.
By now were we on the cyclepath that runs along the river.
Across from us was Dunston.
We could see Dunston Staithes.
Big ships used to dock here to load up with coal.

Along the cycle path they've put arty sculptures.
We thought they were canny good for climbing on.
Here's Dale, Podge and Andy on top of one.
We got inside this one!

There are so many bridges over the river here.
And a big ship below the Tyne Bridge. It's a floating nightclub.
In the distance you can see BALTIC and before that, the Sage Gateshead, where they play music.
We didn't reckon much on them - but we might come back to climb on those sculptures again.

Our last adventure was right at the mouth of the river.
This is us with the North Pier at Tynemouth behind us. Beyond the lighthouse is the North Sea - the end of the Tyne!

We went on jetskis too.
Here's Davy with our instructor.

We crossed the river by walking. Truly. There's a pedestrian tunnel under the river! It comes out at North Shields.
Here we are on the biggest wooden escalator in Britain!
We found more sculptures here to climb on.
Ryan: 'I've not been on a fish before this!'

Tynemouth is on the north side of the river. From it you look across to South Shields on the other side of the river.
And you can look right out to sea. The nearest land from here is Norway.
Lots of ships go in and out of the river, though not as many as in the past.
This huge ferry coming back from Norway passed close beside us at the start of our trip.
We started in South Shields, so that's Tynemouth behind the ferry.

We did great activities in South Shields. We went in kayaks.
Staying the right way up in a kayak is hard. Chris almost tipped Ryan into the water...

You should try a journey like ours down the Tyne. Here's what we thought about it!
