The Millennium Commission assists communities in marking the close of the second millennium and celebrating the start of the third. The Commission uses money raised by the National Lottery to encourage projects throughout the nation which enjoy public support and which will be lasting monuments to the achievements and aspirations of the people of the United Kingdom.
The Urban Cultural Programme is providing £19.5 million of National Lottery funding for cultural projects taking place in 19 urban areas across the UK. The programme is a partnership between the Millennium Commission and Arts Council England. It builds on the successful European Capital of Culture 2008 competition, run in 2003, which generated huge support in all sectors of the community.
